The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Mourns the Loss of President M. Russell Ballard

Salt Lake City - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gathered in solemn remembrance on Friday, November 17, 2023, to bid farewell and honor the life and legacy of President M. Russell Ballard. The funeral service, held at the historic Salt Lake Tabernacle, was attended by members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the Presidency of the Seventy, and the Presiding Bishopric.
President Jeffrey R. Holland, acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, delivered a heartfelt eulogy, hailing President Ballard as one of the most remarkable missionaries in the church's history. President Holland recounted the unwavering support President Ballard provided during his recent hospital stay, where he was "one of the remarkable missionaries of any era in the church." President Holland expressed his gratitude for President Ballard's constant presence during his vital recovery period.
Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles also paid tribute, describing the late President Ballard as the most dedicated missionary of their generation. Elder Cook commended President Ballard's inclusive leadership style, his unwavering testimony of the Savior, and his commitment to simplicity and integrity.
Amidst mourning and heartfelt reflections, President Ballard's children shared memories of their beloved father. According to his youngest son, Craig Ballard, President Ballard had an exceptional ability to tackle complex issues and was always focused on fulfilling his responsibilities. Holly Ballard Clayton, President Ballard's daughter, described her father as a consensus builder, problem solver, and unifier. She fondly recalled his sense of humor, which brought comfort and love to their family during tough times.
President M. Russell Ballard's funeral was filled with hymns and prayers, as the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square provided musical solace to the mourners. The funeral culminated with President Ballard's casket being wheeled out under the serene blue skies of a beautiful fall day, as he was laid to rest in the Salt Lake Cemetery.
President Ballard, born on October 8, 1928, in Salt Lake City, dedicated his life to the service of the church. After serving as a missionary in England, he married Barbara Bowen and together they raised seven children. He served faithfully in various leadership positions, including as president of the Canada Toronto Mission, before being called as an apostle in 1985. President Ballard's service spanned many years, making him the longest-serving living general authority in the church.
