In a recent development, tensions between President Joe Biden and Democrat strategist David Axelrod have come to the forefront after Axelrod questioned the wisdom of Biden's decision to run again in 2024. This friction seems to have deep roots, dating back to the 2016 election and extending to the present.
The disagreement between Biden and Axelrod manifested earlier this month when Axelrod suggested that it might be wise for Biden to drop out of the 2024 race after a poll indicated a potential loss to former President Trump in five battleground states he won in 2020. Axelrod emphasized that the decision ultimately rests with Biden himself and encouraged him to consider whether it is in his best interest or the country's.
Axelrod further expressed his concerns about Biden's "age issue," citing consistent polling data that suggests it is a factor that cannot be reversed, regardless of the president's effectiveness behind the scenes. However, a recent Politico report alleged that Biden privately referred to Axelrod as a "prick," indicating a growing animosity between the two.
This strained relationship between Biden and Axelrod appears to have started during the 2016 election, when Hunter Biden, the president's son, referred to Axelrod as a "giant a--hole" in an email exchange with his business partner and Vice President Biden's deputy counsel. The email exchange took place just before Biden announced that he would not be a candidate for the presidency.
The disdain towards Axelrod continued in a 2017 email exchange between Biden's associates, where they criticized Axelrod for his support of Hillary Clinton over Biden. They referenced a meeting Axelrod had with Joe Biden in the West Wing, where he reportedly argued for Biden to step aside and let Clinton be the Democratic nominee.
Axelrod, who currently serves as a senior CNN political commentator, expressed his unwavering support for Clinton as early as January 2015, according to an email sent by top Clinton aide Huma Abedin. However, leaked WikiLeaks emails from 2016 reveal concerns among Clinton staffers about Axelrod's criticism, with one aide referring to it as a "headache."
The White House has not yet responded to requests for comment on the alleged recent comment made by President Biden or the apparent tension between the Biden family and Axelrod that spans several years.
As the 2024 presidential race looms closer, it remains to be seen how this friction between President Biden and David Axelrod will impact the political landscape and the Democratic Party's chances in the upcoming election.
