In response to recent speculation about Tuvalu potentially switching diplomatic recognition to China, Taiwan's foreign ministry emphasized the strength of its relationship with the Pacific Island nation. The rumors arose following Nauru's decision to sever ties with Taiwan after its presidential election.

On Saturday, reports from Australian media indicated that Bikenibeu Paeniu, Tuvalu's ambassador to Taiwan, had received information suggesting a possible shift in diplomatic recognition to the People's Republic of China (PRC). In light of these reports, Taiwan's foreign ministry reaffirmed its close ties with Tuvalu, citing shared values of freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.

Foreign Minister Joseph Wu further emphasized Taiwan's commitment to addressing climate change and promoting renewable energy cooperation with Tuvalu. The cooperative efforts aim to strengthen the existing relationship between the two nations.

Anna Powles, a senior lecturer at Massey University's Centre for Defense and Security Studies, commented on the ongoing speculation surrounding Tuvalu's allegiance. She highlighted an agreement signed between Australia and Tuvalu, set to take effect in 2023, which could potentially complicate any diplomatic switch. Under this agreement, Tuvalu would require Australia's permission for any security and defense-related engagements with other states or entities.

Notably, Nauru recently became the tenth country to sever diplomatic ties with Taiwan in the past eight years. Rumors regarding Nauru's shift in recognition had been circulating since 2023. With Nauru's departure, Taiwan is left with 12 formal diplomatic allies, primarily located in Central and South America as well as the Caribbean.

Taiwan remains committed to strengthening ties with its existing allies while addressing any potential changes in diplomatic relationships. The country continues to advocate for its universal values and engage in cooperative efforts with its partners across the globe.
