In a swift development, the man suspected of pushing a woman into a moving train at a Manhattan subway station has been apprehended by the authorities. The arrest took place in Newark, New Jersey, on Thursday, according to the Newark Police Department.

The suspect has been identified as 39-year-old Sabir Jones, as previously announced by the New York City Police Department (NYPD). Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé confirmed the detention of Jones at the intersection of Raymond Boulevard and McCarter Highway, near a PATH train station, around 12:20 p.m. on Thursday.

Fragé stated that Jones has been transferred to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. However, no further details regarding his whereabouts or the charges against him have been made available as of Thursday afternoon.

The incident, which occurred at the subway station on 53rd Street and Fifth Avenue, stunned the city on Wednesday. The NYPD Chief of Transit, Michael Kemper, revealed during a press conference that Jones was recognized and identified through video surveillance within hours of the heinous act.

According to officials, Jones allegedly fled the subway station after pushing a 30-year-old woman standing on the southbound E and F platform into an E train that was departing. The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and is currently listed in critical condition.

While authorities continue to investigate the incident, they believe it to be an unprovoked attack. The New York Times reported that a man who claimed to have been punched by the suspect, resulting in a broken jaw, recognized Jones from a photograph. The individual stated that he was awaiting surgery when he saw the photo and identified the suspect.

MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber expressed gratitude to the exceptional work of the NYPD, stating, "This was a horrific crime, but I'm gratified that again the always exceptional NYPD police work led to a quick arrest."

The arrest of Sabir Jones brings some relief to a shaken community, as investigators work diligently to understand the motives behind this troubling incident. As more information becomes available, the public will undoubtedly seek answers and justice for the victim.
