On Saturday, the Portland metro area experienced bitter cold temperatures exacerbated by strong and blustery winds. The National Weather Service reported wind chills in the single digits above to single digits below zero. Although the winds were easing on Sunday, they continued to blow from the east.

The intensity of the winds resulted in trees toppling throughout the metro area, leading to blocked roads and severe damage to homes. Tragically, two deaths on Saturday were attributed to falling trees, highlighting the dangers posed by the strong gusts.

Additionally, the wind chill posed a significant risk to individuals without proper shelter. Unfortunately, one person in Multnomah County was found dead on Saturday due to suspected hypothermia. To provide refuge from the winter storm, various warming shelters were opened throughout the area.

Among the notable wind gusts recorded on Saturday was a staggering 83 mph at Crown Point in the Columbia River Gorge, underscoring the force and power of the winds.

The combination of freezing temperatures and fierce winds created treacherous conditions in the Portland metro area, resulting in loss of life, extensive property damage, and increased risk to individuals without shelter. Authorities are urging residents to take necessary precautions and seek appropriate shelter during such extreme weather conditions.
