After a day of heavy rain and strong winds on Tuesday, the weather in North Georgia has momentarily calmed down. However, the respite will be short-lived as Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan warns of another strong system approaching the region later today and Thursday. This incoming system poses an elevated risk for strong and severe storms across north Georgia.
Severe Weather Team 2 will closely monitor and update the timeline of this system on Channel 2 Action News. The severity of the upcoming weather event varies across different parts of the region. On Friday afternoon and early evening, there is a level 3 out of 5 severe weather risk existing approximately south of I-20. In the north metro area, the risk level is 2, while in the north Georgia mountains, it is 1.
According to Monahan, every region in north Georgia will face some form of severe weather risk on Friday. Wednesday will be relatively calm but breezy, with temperatures reaching the upper 40s. Thursday will bring some relief, with temperatures near 60 degrees and sunny conditions.
The forecast for Friday predicts showers moving in during the morning, with the severe risk intensifying throughout the afternoon hours. Monahan cautions that the storms on Friday will have the potential to generate damaging wind gusts of up to 60 mph and brief, spin-up tornadoes, particularly in the southern areas of the region.
Residents in north Georgia are advised to stay informed about the developing weather situation and take necessary precautions. Paying attention to updates from Severe Weather Team 2 and local authorities will be crucial in staying safe during this potential severe weather event.
