The hearing is scheduled to take place on March 12, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigation.
After months of investigating, Hur released his report to the public last week, in which he did not recommend criminal charges against Biden for his actions related to classified documents. Hur stated that he would not bring charges against Biden, even if he were not the current president.
The classified records in question contain information about military and foreign policy in Afghanistan, as well as other countries. Hur highlighted that these records implicated "sensitive intelligence sources and methods." While Hur did not recommend any charges against the president, he described Biden as a "sympathetic, well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory."
Biden's 2024 re-election campaign has raised significant concerns in response to the description put forth by Hur. The president has forcefully rejected the characterization, stating that his memory is indeed fine and emphasizing that he is the most qualified person to hold the office.
During his address, Biden also criticized Hur for suggesting that he did not remember when his son Beau died. The president expressed indignation at the question, stating, "How dare he raise that?" However, Hur's report did state that Biden did not remember the exact timing of his son's passing within several years.
Contrary to initial impressions, two well-placed sources familiar with the investigation claim that it was Biden himself who brought up Beau's death during the interview, not Hur. In light of these developments, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, and House Ways & Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith are demanding access to the transcript and any recordings of Biden's interview. The three committee leaders are leading the impeachment inquiry against the president.
Comer specifically expressed interest in determining if any classified records held by Biden are related to countries involved in his family's alleged foreign business dealings. The committee leaders are concerned that sensitive materials may have been used to aid the Bidens' purported influence peddling.
As the public hearing approaches, all eyes will be on Special Counsel Robert Hur as he testifies before the House Judiciary Committee. The outcome of this hearing may have significant implications for the ongoing investigation and President Biden's political future.
