A disturbing incident occurred in Garden Grove, California, where a Southern California man allegedly shot and killed a homeless man who was blocking a sidewalk. According to the Orange County district attorney's office, the accused, 68-year-old Craig Sumner Elliott, captured the shooting on video.
The incident took place on September 28 when Elliott was out jogging with his two dogs. As he approached the sidewalk, he encountered Antonio García Avalos, a 40-year-old homeless man who was asleep in the middle of the pathway. In an attempt to wake Avalos up and continue his jog, Elliott used his pushcart to nudge the sleeping man.
However, Avalos woke up and began shouting at Elliott, demanding him to move away. In response, Elliott allegedly grabbed a handgun from his pushcart. The district attorney's office stated that a video taken by Elliott shows Avalos standing up and throwing a shoe at him, causing Elliott to duck. Within seconds, the video allegedly captures Elliott shooting Avalos three times.
Tragically, Avalos succumbed to his injuries and lost his life. Elliott has been charged with felony voluntary manslaughter and felony enhancement of personal use of a firearm. It was revealed that Elliott possessed an active concealed carry permit from the Orange County Sheriff's Department at the time of the shooting.
After an investigation, the Garden Grove Police Department arrested Elliott on November 17, and he was subsequently released on November 20 after posting a $100,000 bail. Elliott is scheduled to be arraigned on December 15.
CNN was unable to locate attorney contact information for Elliott. As the legal process unfolds, the community awaits further insights into the motive behind this tragic incident.
