Snowstorm and High Winds Cause Road Closures in Colorado Mountains

A powerful snowstorm and high winds have resulted in multiple road closures in the Colorado mountains and along the Front Range, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). Motorists are being warned about the challenging travel conditions and potential delays caused by blowing snow, limited visibility, sub-freezing wind chills, and avalanche control operations.
The CDOT advisory states that the mountainous areas are expected to experience up to two feet of snow along the I-70 corridor spanning from Vail to the Eisenhower Tunnel. Additionally, accumulations of up to 40 inches are possible along U.S. 40 near Rabbit Ears Pass. While temperatures tend to be relatively warmer in higher elevations than in the Front Range and Eastern Plains, the snowfall accumulations are significantly higher.
As of Monday morning, CDOT has announced several road closures due to adverse conditions or safety concerns. These include:
- Interstate 25 southbound between Colo. 52 and Dacono (exit 232)
- Interstate 70 in both directions from West Vail (mile point 176) to Copper Mountain (mile point 195)
- Interstate 70 eastbound from Frisco to Silverthorne due to a crash
- Interstate 70 eastbound from Silverthorne to the Eisenhower/Johnson Tunnel due to adverse conditions
- Interstate 70 westbound from U.S. 40 (Empire Junction) to Bakerville (exit 221)
- U.S. 6 in both directions over Loveland Pass from I-70 to Montezuma Road
- U.S. 40 in both directions over Berthoud Pass from mile marker 234.5 to 243
- U.S. 50 in both directions from mile point 190 (west of Garfield) to mile point 210 (Maysville) for safety concerns
- U.S. 550 in both directions from mile points 71 to 91 over Red Mountain Pass
- Colo. 14 in both directions from U.S. 40 to west of Kinikinik, including Cameron Pass
- Colo. 125 in both directions from Wyoming to Granby
- Colo. 127 in both directions from Colo. 125 to Wyoming
- Colo. 145 in both directions from Snow Spur Creek to County Road 63A for safety concerns
Travelers are advised to expect delays on Monday and Tuesday due to winter maintenance and snow removal operations on open roads, including I-70, U.S. 40, and U.S. 50. Commercial vehicles are required to use chains on most mountain passes.
As the snowstorm and high winds continue to impact the region, motorists are urged to exercise caution, plan for potential delays, and stay updated on road conditions before embarking on their journeys.
