Severe weather is expected to hit parts of Alabama later this week, according to meteorologist Jim Stefkovich from the Alabama Emergency Management Agency. The state will face a blast of cold weather along with the potential for strong storms and heavy rainfall.

Starting today, precipitation will gradually spread northward across Alabama, with a chance of a few ice pellets and snowflakes in the far northeastern part of the state. No travel issues are anticipated at this time.

On Friday, rain and thunderstorms will enter western Alabama in the afternoon, gradually spreading across the rest of the state by evening and concluding by Saturday morning. Coastal areas and counties near the state line may experience a few strong to severe storms during this time. The storms could bring damaging winds and the possibility of tornadoes. Areas along the coast are expected to have the highest instability, but this could change and impact inland areas as well.

Rainfall of up to 2 inches is projected for areas north of Highway 80/I-85, while southern parts of the state could see up to 4 inches, with even higher amounts possible in stronger thunderstorms.

Non-thunderstorm winds are also expected to increase statewide from late Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon. Gusts of up to 40 mph are possible during this period.

Following a dry period on Saturday afternoon through Monday morning, meteorologist Jim Stefkovich stated that models are indicating a "potent system" developing. This system could produce supercells and more severe weather, potentially on Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning. Once again, damaging wind gusts and tornadoes could be possible, primarily in the southern part of the state. However, the risk level and threat area may change as the situation evolves.

Non-thunderstorm winds ahead of the approaching storms are expected to generate gusts of 20-30 mph from late Monday afternoon to Tuesday morning. Additionally, several more inches of rain are forecasted. Combined with the rainfall from Friday to Saturday, localized flash flooding is possible, especially in areas south of Highway 80/I-85.

Residents of Alabama are urged to stay updated on the weather conditions and follow any advisories or warnings issued by the Alabama Emergency Management Agency. Take necessary precautions to ensure safety during possible severe storms and heavy rainfall.

As the situation continues to develop, stay tuned for further updates on the severe weather situation in Alabama.
