SALT LAKE CITY - M. Russell Ballard, a highly respected leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), has died at the age of 95, according to an official statement released by the church on Monday.
Ballard, who was second-in-line to become church president, passed away at his home on Sunday surrounded by his family. He had served as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles since 1985, playing a crucial role in setting church policies, overseeing its business interests, and ensuring a smooth transition in leadership.
As the great-great-grandson of church co-founder Hyrum Smith, Ballard had a deep connection to the organization. His journey within the church began as a young missionary in England, and he steadily rose through the ranks, serving as a bishop, the president of the Toronto mission, and a member of the Presidency of the Seventy.
During a church conference last April, Ballard emphasized the importance of lasting relationships, particularly within families. His heartfelt words resonated as he shared his experiences visiting victims of natural disasters, stressing the necessity of emotional and physical health through these vital connections.
In recent months, Ballard's name made headlines as the church publicly accused Tim Ballard, founder of Operation Underground Railroad, an anti-child-trafficking organization, of unauthorized use of M. Russell Ballard's name for personal gain. Tim Ballard has denied the allegations while a lawsuit alleges his involvement in sexually coercing and assaulting women involved in child-trafficking stings abroad.
M. Russell Ballard, born in Salt Lake City in 1928 to Melvin R. and Geraldine Smith Ballard, lost his wife, Barbara, in 2018. He leaves behind a legacy of seven children, 43 grandchildren, 105 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
According to church traditions, a replacement for Ballard will be chosen at a later date. Such announcements are typically made during the faith's semi-annual conference, which is scheduled for the first weekend of April, where new members can be chosen from anywhere, primarily based on their service in lower-tier leadership roles. These individuals typically hail from diverse professional backgrounds, often being older men who have achieved success outside the church.
The passing of M. Russell Ballard marks the end of an era for the LDS church, as its members mourn the loss of a revered leader who dedicated his life to serving others. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide the faithful on their spiritual journeys.
