In a recent study conducted by FinanceBuzz, the holiday spirit in different cities across the United States was evaluated, revealing which areas were lacking in Christmas events and festive activities. Surprisingly, San Antonio, Texas emerged as the Grinchiest city, with the fewest holiday events per capita.
FinanceBuzz assessed the 50 largest cities in the U.S., taking into account various holiday-themed factors such as the number of department and toy stores, Google Trends searches, and more. Each city was assigned a score out of 100, with lower scores indicating a lower holiday spirit.
San Antonio secured the top spot on the list of humbug cities, with only approximately 45 holiday events per 100,000 residents. This figure is a staggering 75% lower than the national average of 185 events per 100,000 people. The city's lackluster score of 32.7 out of 100 highlighted its scarcity of holiday cheer.
Following closely behind San Antonio, Jacksonville, Florida claimed the second spot on the Grinchiest list with a holiday score of 33.7 out of 100. San Diego, California ranked third with a score of 34.8, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma came in fourth place with a score of 35.2. Louisville, Kentucky and Virginia Beach, Virginia rounded out the top six, each scoring 35.4 and 36.3 respectively.
Interestingly, Houston, another major Texas city, also fell into the category of cities with the fewest holiday festivals and activities. Furthermore, Austin was named on FinanceBuzz's "Naughty List" due to its low charity contribution rate during the holiday season, with just 37.7% of residents per 100,000 supporting charities.
On the other end of the spectrum, FinanceBuzz also highlighted the "jolliest" cities in the U.S. Minneapolis, Minnesota, took the crown as the city with the most holiday offerings. Additionally, Minneapolis residents showcased their generous spirit, with 62.1% of them donating annually and 46% volunteering throughout the year, the highest rates among all cities surveyed.
Although San Antonio may not be synonymous with Christmas cheer, it is important to note that the holiday spirit can still be found in the hearts of individuals and communities, even in the Grinchiest of cities. With or without a multitude of holiday events, the true essence of the holiday season lies in the kindness and generosity shared by individuals towards one another. Perhaps San Antonio will see an increase in festive activities and events in the years to come, bringing an even bigger dose of holiday cheer to its residents.
