Florida Governor and potential 2024 presidential candidate, Ron DeSantis, has expressed strong criticism towards the United Nations (UN), calling it a "mess" and a "total farce." In an interview with DailyMail.com, DeSantis stated that if he becomes president, he would eliminate U.S. funding for the organization due to recent actions of the General Assembly, which have been widely viewed as anti-Semitic and anti-Israel.
DeSantis specifically cited comments made by the UN General Secretary António Guterres regarding the Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel earlier this month. Guterres claimed that these attacks were a response to Israel's actions, a statement that has sparked controversy and been seen by many as biased against Israel.
Furthermore, DeSantis expressed dismay at the UN General Assembly's recent vote calling for an immediate ceasefire in Israel. The Governor argued that by asking Israel not to defend itself against a Palestinian terrorist organization, the UN was displaying a double standard and failing to acknowledge the atrocities committed against Israeli citizens.
"What an absolute disgrace," DeSantis exclaimed during the interview. "So wait a minute, Israelis can be massacred, butchered, raped, mutilated, and burned – and yet somehow they're not supposed to respond? I mean, give me a break."
DeSantis described the United Nations as a "worthless disaster" and questioned why the United States continues to fund the organization. He criticized the UN for becoming a platform where "bad actors in the world get together and misbehave," stating that it no longer serves the interests of the United States.
The Governor's remarks came ahead of a breakfast event with Nevada Republicans and a speech at the Republican Jewish Coalition's annual leadership summit, where he joined other 2024 presidential hopefuls. DeSantis emphasized the personal significance of the conflict in Israel for the people of Florida and revealed that his state's government funding is being used to facilitate the evacuation of Floridians and Americans from Israel amidst the ongoing deadly air strikes.
While Republicans and pro-Israel advocates argue that calling for a ceasefire hampers Israel's ability to defend itself against terrorism, pro-Palestine groups contend that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is rooted in longstanding oppression and occupation.
When asked if he would strip U.S. funding to the UN as president, DeSantis firmly responded, "Yes. I mean, yeah, absolutely." He further elaborated that the organization's lack of moral authority and failure to condemn the Hamas attacks have led to a loss of credibility, rendering the UN a "total farce."
The Governor's strong stance towards the United Nations indicates a potential shift in U.S. policy if DeSantis were to assume the presidency. As the political landscape evolves, the debate surrounding the UN's effectiveness and role on the global stage is likely to continue.
