In a heartwarming reunion just in time for the holidays, a retired military working dog, John, has been reunited with his former handler, US Air Force Staff Sergeant Mike Alcala. The 10-year-old German shepherd had been separated from Alcala for over two years as he prepared for retirement.
The emotional reunion took place in San Antonio, Texas, where American Humane surprised both John and Alcala with the pre-holiday gathering. The bond between Alcala and John was formed during their three years of service together, as they worked side by side on a daily basis.
However, in September 2021, Alcala was reassigned to a different base, resulting in the separation of the dedicated duo. When news of John's retirement reached Alcala, he reached out to American Humane for assistance in bringing his beloved companion home for adoption.
American Humane, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC, specializes in transporting retired K-9 veterans to their former handlers. The organization takes care of all the necessary logistics, paperwork, and associated costs, making the adoption process smoother for both the dogs and their handlers.
John had served as an explosive-detection dog at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii for an impressive eight years. Throughout his career, he had diligently protected civilians, fellow service members, and even high-profile VIPs, including American presidents, first ladies, and foreign dignitaries.
To honor his years of service, John recently received a special retirement ceremony in Hawaii, recognizing his dedicated contributions to the military.
During the long-awaited reunion between Alcala and John, their 10-month-old daughter Avery was introduced to her furry family member. The joyful meeting filled the Alcala household with excitement and happiness.
Reflecting on the reunion, Alcala expressed his gratitude for American Humane's assistance in bringing John back to him, mentioning that they handled the transportation from Hawaii to San Antonio at no cost. In addition to their support, American Humane has also committed to covering all of John's veterinary care for the remainder of his life, as retired K-9 veterans often face health complications that require extensive medical attention.
As Alcala looks forward to spending the holidays with his beloved K-9 companion, he expressed his joy that John can now enjoy a well-deserved retirement, free to relax and enjoy the rest of his life with the Alcala family.
The heartwarming reunion between Staff Sergeant Mike Alcala and John serves as a testament to the unbreakable bond formed between military working dogs and their handlers. Their story is a reminder of the sacrifices and dedication of both human and canine heroes who serve our country.
