In a recent interview with CNN, Republican Rep. Troy Nehls of Texas boldly stated that he is reluctant to take significant action that would benefit Democrats and improve President Joe Biden's approval ratings. Nehls, a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, expressed his unwillingness to assist the opposition party and criticized Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for his inaction on HR 2, a hardline immigration bill.

Nehls emphasized that he would only consider supporting a proposal similar to HR 2, which passed the House earlier this year without any Democratic votes. Frustrated with the lack of progress, he questioned Schumer's motives for delaying action on the bill that has been sitting on his desk since July.

The issue of border security and immigration has become a notable weakness for President Biden, with a recent poll revealing that only 38% of Americans approve of his handling of the matter. Nehls, conscious of Trump's desire to counteract Biden's administration, even expressed his intent to provide "a little bit of ammo to fire back" by pursuing impeachment proceedings against Biden.

Nehls' comments coincided with a visit by over 60 House Republicans to the US-Mexico border on Wednesday. Many of these lawmakers have voiced their skepticism towards accepting any compromise on border security that may arise from Senate negotiations.

HR 2, officially known as the "Secure the Border Act of 2023," proposes an extensive overhaul of the country's immigration laws. It seeks to limit migrants' ability to seek asylum in the US and calls for the continuation of border wall construction.

Meanwhile, senators have been engaged in closed-door discussions to forge a compromise deal on border security and immigration. Although it is unlikely to align completely with HR 2, this potential agreement is expected to garner sufficient support from both Republicans and Democrats to pass the Senate.

Republicans have taken a firm stance, insisting that border security issues must be addressed before any additional aid can be provided to Ukraine and Israel.

As negotiations continue, the outcome remains uncertain. The differing positions and priorities of lawmakers from both parties underscore the challenges of achieving a bipartisan consensus on such a contentious issue.
