In an in-depth interview with ABC News, billionaire co-founder of Home Depot and major Republican donor Bernie Marcus explained why he is actively supporting former President Donald Trump in his bid for the GOP presidential nomination in 2024. While Marcus admitted that he is not necessarily "happy" about Trump leading the pack, he cited the former president's popularity in polls as the main reason for his vocal endorsement.

During the interview, Marcus expressed his admiration for former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, stating that he thinks she is "great." He also commended Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, describing him as "well qualified" and praising his policies.

Initially planning to withdraw from politics, Marcus decided to return due to what he perceived as failures on the part of the Biden administration. According to Marcus, he believes that the country is in peril and desperately needs Trump to lead.

While Marcus indicated that he would be "very happy" if either Haley or DeSantis secured the GOP nomination, he firmly believes that Trump is unbeatable. Despite his support for alternatives, Marcus emphasized his unwavering endorsement of Trump and lauded his economic and foreign policies.

Regarding Trump's personality, Marcus acknowledged that some find his "abusive" style off-putting. He revealed personal conversations with the former president, explaining that he has advised Trump to focus more on policies rather than engaging in abrasive behavior. Marcus also criticized Trump for his speech prior to the January 6th Capitol riot, noting that he could have handled the situation differently.

While Marcus did not disclose the exact amount he intends to donate to Trump's campaign, he stated that it would be consistent with his previous contributions. Throughout the years, Marcus has been one of Trump's biggest financial supporters, having donated $10 million to a pro-Trump super PAC during the 2020 campaign, and $7 million to conservative super PACs during the 2016 general election.

Marcus is just one of many Republican donors who had initially distanced themselves from Trump but have since circled back, particularly due to his surge in national polling. Some GOP donors, however, are still undecided or seeking an alternative candidate to unite behind.

Marcus believes that his endorsement will have an impact, especially on those who are undecided or unsure about supporting Trump. Despite his commitment to Trump's reelection, Marcus expressed his desire to focus on his philanthropic efforts through his eponymous foundation, which has donated over $2 billion towards initiatives such as medical research and veteran support.

As the 2024 presidential race heats up, Marcus's endorsement adds to the ongoing debate within the Republican Party about its future direction and leadership.
