In a shocking revelation, a recent report has uncovered the horrifying abuse and sexual assault endured by at least 400 female and child migrants in specially set up "rape tents" along the perilous Darien Gap. The study, conducted by Doctors Without Borders, has shed light on the terrible suffering faced by those attempting to reach the United States through this treacherous route.

According to the report, in the month of October alone, 107 survivors of rape were treated by the organization, with the victims ranging from women to young children as young as 11 years old. The Darien Gap, known as one of the most dangerous migrant crossings in the world, has become a hotbed for criminal gangs who demand bribes from the migrants. Those unable to pay are subjected to unspeakable abuse, including sexual assault within the tents specifically set up for this purpose.

Throughout the year, an estimated 460,000 migrants have crossed the Darien Gap, many of whom have spent their life savings in the hopes of a better future. However, armed groups prey on these vulnerable individuals, extorting money and subjecting them to heinous acts of violence if they cannot meet their demands.

The report further reveals that the issue of sexual abuse on this migrant journey is widespread, with one rape occurring every three hours. Despite these harrowing statistics, Doctors Without Borders believes that the actual numbers may even be higher, as many victims do not come forward due to fear or shame.

The situation continues to escalate, with a recent caravan comprising 7,000 migrants making their way through the dangerous and lawless pathways of the Darien Gap. Costa Rica, a country along the route, has declared a state of emergency as it grapples with the influx of migrants passing through its borders.

The distressing testimonies of the survivors paint a horrifying picture of the atrocities committed within the Darien Gap. One tearful Venezuelan woman shared her experience, stating, "We crossed the jungle looking for a better future, not for our lives to end... A snake does not end your life. Your life is ended by the men inside the jungle who rape and kill."

In light of this grave situation, Doctors Without Borders has issued a demand to global governments, urging them to ensure the safe passage of migrants and access to medical care. The organization highlights that migration is not a crime and emphasizes that human mobility is a universal right that should be protected.

As the world grapples with the ongoing migrant crisis, it is crucial for governments and international bodies to address the rampant violence and abuse faced by vulnerable individuals. Immediate action must be taken to protect the rights and safety of migrants on their journey towards a brighter future.
