In a heated exchange on CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Sunday, Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., engaged in a contentious debate with host Joe Kernen regarding the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. The conversation centered around the casualties and the humanitarian consequences of the conflict.
Khanna began by emphasizing the disproportionate number of civilian casualties, stating that Israel has reportedly killed 1,000 to 2,000 Hamas fighters, while almost 12,000 civilians have lost their lives, including a significant number of children. Kernen interjected, arguing that Hamas had initiated the conflict by slaying 1,400 people.
In response, Khanna estimated the potential number of civilian casualties if all 40,000 Hamas fighters were to be eliminated, suggesting that it could reach as high as 300,000, with 50% being children. He stressed the importance of not only considering the strategic aspects of the war but also the humanitarian aspect.
Expressing his views on Israel's response, Khanna advocated for diminishing their military capability and preventing future attacks similar to the events on October 7. However, he acknowledged the unlikelihood of such a scenario given Israel's current military actions in northern Gaza. Khanna also called for a negotiated peace agreement, one that excludes Hamas, as he believes the terrorist organization does not recognize Israel.
Khanna's stance aligns with his support for a "lasting cease-fire" in the Israel-Hamas war, as reported by the Washington Examiner. Several other prominent Democrats, including members of the "Squad," have also called for a cease-fire, citing concerns over the impact on children in Gaza.
In a recent development, Qatar announced an extension of the cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas for two additional days. Hamas officials confirmed the extension, while Israeli officials have yet to comment on the matter. The terms of the previous exchange agreement will reportedly continue, with Hamas releasing hostages and Israel releasing Palestinian criminals.
As the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues, international attention remains focused on finding a peaceful resolution to safeguard civilian lives and restore stability to the region.
