In a surprising turn of events, Rep. Andy Kim (D-N.J.) has emerged with a commanding lead in the New Jersey Senate primary, surpassing both first lady Tammy Murphy and Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), according to an internal poll released by Kim's campaign.
The poll, which surveyed 1,040 likely New Jersey Democratic voters, revealed that Kim holds a substantial lead over his competitors. Among likely primary voters, Kim leads Murphy by a significant margin of 45 percent to 22 percent. Meanwhile, Menendez garnered only 3 percent of support.
Kim, who was notably the first New Jersey Democrat to call for Menendez's resignation after his indictment on corruption charges, subsequently launched a Senate challenge against him. This unexpected move has seemingly paid off for Kim, as his campaign's internal polling highlights his popularity among New Jersey Democrats.
The survey results indicate that both Kim and Murphy enjoy double-digit net favorability ratings, with Kim sporting a strong +35 net rating, compared to Murphy's +17. However, it is worth noting that about half of the voters polled were not familiar enough with either candidate to make a determination.
In addition to his overall lead, Kim's dominance extends across multiple demographic categories. The internal poll reveals a 42-point advantage for Kim among progressive voters, as well as a 19-point lead among moderates. Furthermore, Kim holds a commanding 17-point lead among women respondents.
"I've never seen this kind of energy in New Jersey that I'm seeing now on the campaign trail. Voters are fed up with usual Jersey politics and are hungry for a change," expressed Kim in a statement. "People are coming out in droves all over New Jersey to join us because they want an experienced public servant that will represent them with integrity through these challenging times."
Interestingly, the previous survey conducted by the Kim campaign last month showed similar results, with Kim leading the pack at 40 percent support, Murphy trailing at 21 percent, and Menendez at a mere 5 percent.
Menendez's support has been waning, with dozens of Democrats across the country calling for his resignation, which he has staunchly refused. The senator maintains his innocence, vehemently denying any wrongdoing.
As the New Jersey Democratic primary looms on June 4, Rep. Andy Kim's internal polling results position him as the clear frontrunner. However, it remains to be seen how the race will unfold in the coming weeks, as both Murphy and Menendez continue to vie for support and make their case to New Jersey voters.
