In a disappointing turn of events for outdoor enthusiasts, the REI store located in Portland's Pearl District is set to permanently close its doors on Thursday, leaving a void in the city's sporting goods sector. The decision to shutter the store was announced by the company in April 2023, citing an alarming surge in thefts and break-ins – the highest in the store's 20-year history.
Despite concerted efforts by Mayor Ted Wheeler and the Portland Police Bureau to bolster security measures and persuade the company to reconsider its decision, the closure will proceed as planned. The store, located at Northwest 14th and Johnson, will open at 10 a.m. on its last day and serve customers until 7 p.m.
The closure comes as the company faces financial uncertainty, leading to layoffs in its headquarters in Seattle. REI recently laid off 357 workers, primarily from its Seattle base. This restructuring is a clear indication that the company is taking steps to navigate the challenging business landscape while maintaining a presence in the Portland metropolitan area.
It's worth noting that despite the closure of the Pearl District store, Portlanders still have access to three other REI locations in the metro area. These stores, situated in Tualatin, Hillsboro, and Clackamas, will continue to serve outdoor enthusiasts in the region.
The REI closure is not only a loss for the Pearl District community but also marks the end of an era for many loyal customers who have relied on the store for their sporting goods needs. As the company bids farewell to its Portland location, there is hope that security measures and community engagement can be further strengthened to ensure the safety and prosperity of businesses in the Pearl District.
