The Hudson Valley is set to experience a dramatic weather shift this weekend, with record-breaking warmth on Saturday followed by the potential for a significant winter storm on Monday night into Tuesday.

On Saturday, the region will feel the effects of a large upper-level ridge, resulting in a mix of clouds and limited breaks of sunshine. A steady southwest breeze will contribute to temperatures soaring into the middle and upper 50s across the Hudson Valley, potentially breaking the record high of 56°F set in Poughkeepsie in 2001.

However, as a cold front approaches later in the day, the wind direction will change to northwest. This convergence of wind could produce some atmospheric lift, leading to scattered showers and the possibility of a rumble of thunder. While not everyone will experience these showers, it is advised to be prepared for a rain delay.

After the front passes through, temperatures will plummet on Saturday night into Sunday, with a difference of approximately 15 to 20 degrees. Poughkeepsie, which could reach around 59°F on Saturday afternoon, is expected to drop to around 42°F by Sunday afternoon.

The infusion of colder air sets the stage for potential trouble on Monday night into Tuesday as a storm system rides northeast along Saturday's frontal boundary. Moisture from the storm will encounter the colder air, resulting in significant snowfall for parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions.

The track of the storm remains uncertain, but there has been growing agreement between the GFS and European models. This suggests that the Hudson Valley will likely be impacted by the storm. Currently, the odds are leaning towards a snow event for the area, but there is still a 10% chance that the low pressure system tracks to the north, resulting in a mainly rain event.

The Canadian model, for the first time, has shifted to agree with the GFS and European models, further enhancing the confidence in the storm's development. While preparations for the Super Bowl take place on Sunday, residents of the Hudson Valley will also need to prepare for the potential impacts of this winter storm.

As the progression of the storm system and its impacts on the Hudson Valley are closely monitored, discussions will continue throughout the weekend. In the meantime, enjoy the potential record warmth on Saturday but stay tuned for updates on the imminent winter storm.
