As we head into the weekend, temperatures are set to soar, reaching record highs across southern New England. The region can expect a warm afternoon, with high temperatures ranging from the upper 50s to low 60s, especially from Boston down to the Merrimack Valley. The previous record high of 60 degrees, set at Logan Airport last year, is likely to be surpassed today.

While clouds will intermittently pass through the region, temperatures in the north will still reach the upper 40s to low 50s, while the south coast and Cape Cod can expect mid to upper 40s. The north may experience a few scattered showers and sprinkles in the afternoon, along with mixed precipitation in higher elevations, as a cold front approaches. Later in the evening, as the front moves through western areas of southern New England and Vermont, there may be a few more showers and even an isolated rumble of thunder. There is also a slight chance of small hail accompanying these passing showers.

As the night progresses, most of the showers will dissipate as they move eastward, leaving behind cool temperatures and cloudy skies. Overnight lows are expected to fall into the upper 30s in the south and the low to mid 30s in the north.

Super Bowl Sunday is set to bring mild and dry conditions, with a mix of clouds and sun. Highs will range from the mid 40s to around 50 degrees. The following day, Monday, will be slightly cooler with increasing cloud cover and highs reaching the mid 40s.

Beyond Monday, all eyes will be on a developing coastal storm, which has the potential to bring heavy snowfall to parts of the region. However, the forecast for this storm remains uncertain due to the lack of cold air ahead of the system and the exact track it will take. Nevertheless, forecast models have been consistently suggesting a colder scenario, as the storm rapidly intensifies south of New England on Tuesday morning.

At present, it appears likely that the Boston area will experience a plowable amount of snow, with higher totals expected inland. However, any subtle shift in the storm's track could significantly affect these snowfall predictions. Forecasters will closely monitor this storm and provide updates as new information becomes available.

In addition to snowfall, this coastal storm could also bring strong winds and potential coastal flooding, given that it coincides with the back end of an astronomical high tide cycle. Residents are advised to stay informed and prepared for these possible weather hazards.

Looking ahead, colder air will move in after the storm passes, signaling a trend towards chilly temperatures for the coming days. Stay tuned for the latest updates on this developing coastal system. Enjoy your Saturday!
