As the holiday season approaches, Americans across the country are preparing for unconventional weather patterns. Record-high temperatures and a cross-country storm are set to impact various regions during the Christmas weekend.
According to forecasts, the Upper Midwest is expected to experience an unusually warm Christmas Eve, with some areas potentially breaking temperature records. In Minneapolis, Minnesota, the forecasted high for this year is projected to be nearly 10 degrees higher than the record of 46 degrees set in 1957. Similarly, states such as Iowa, Wisconsin, and North Dakota are also anticipated to reach temperatures in the 40s and 50s, potentially leading to the warmest-ever Christmas Eve recorded in the past 150 years.
Other cities in the Midwest, including Duluth in Minnesota, Green Bay in Wisconsin, Sioux Falls in South Dakota, and Cedar Rapids in Iowa, may also witness record-breaking high temperatures on Christmas Eve. Green Bay, in particular, is expected to approach a record high of nearly 50 degrees on Christmas Day.
Meanwhile, a cross-country storm that began in the Rockies and the desert Southwest is making its way across the country. On Sunday and Monday, heavy rain is expected in the Midwest and South, stretching from the borders of Canada to Mexico. Regions near the Missouri-Kansas border, including Kansas City, may face flooding with more than 3 inches of rainfall possible. New Orleans to Mobile, Alabama, may also experience flooding with over 3 inches of rain forecasted. Additionally, heavy rain and potential flooding will affect Florida's panhandle, Georgia, and South Carolina, with a total rainfall accumulation of 2 to 3 inches on the Gulf Coast.
The cross-country storm will eventually reach the East Coast on Tuesday, followed by the Northeast on Wednesday. While the rain is not expected to cause major issues, it may lead to wet roads and minor ponding.
In terms of snowfall, parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Colorado are already experiencing snowfall with the heaviest amounts in Nebraska and Colorado. A blizzard warning has been issued for multiple regions in Nebraska and South Dakota, with total snow accumulations of 8 to 18 inches and winds gusting up to 55 mph. This could result in whiteout conditions and potential power outages. Eastern Nebraska, including the Omaha area, may see snow and sleet accumulations between 2 and 9 inches, along with possible ice accumulations. These conditions will persist late Sunday through Christmas Day.
Looking ahead to the rest of the holiday weekend, snow is likely to continue falling in the Plains on Tuesday, with possible ice issues expected in northern Minnesota. On the West Coast, rain is possible from Northern California to Washington.
In summary, this holiday weekend will bring unconventional weather patterns to America. While some regions anticipate record-high temperatures on Christmas Eve, others will face heavy rain and potential flooding. Snowfall and blizzard conditions will impact parts of the Midwest and the Plains, while rain may affect the East Coast. As Americans celebrate the holidays, they will need to adapt their plans to the unpredictable weather conditions.
