In the latest Quinnipiac University national poll of registered voters, former President Donald Trump remains the frontrunner in the 2024 GOP presidential primary race, while former United States Ambassador and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has tied with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for second place. The poll also reveals a decline in voter support for U.S. military aid to Israel.
According to the poll, among Republican and Republican-leaning voters, 67 percent support Trump, while DeSantis and Haley both garnered 11 percent support. Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy received 4 percent support, and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie received 3 percent support. This marks Trump and Haley's highest levels of support so far in the Quinnipiac University Poll.
The poll also highlights DeSantis' downward trend, as this is his lowest score of the year. In February, he received 36 percent support, indicating a year-long slide, while Haley gains momentum in her bid for the presidency.
Interestingly, the poll reveals that 50 percent of Republican and Republican-leaning voters are open to changing their candidate choice leading up to the Republican primary, while 48 percent say they are firmly set on their choice. This suggests that there is still room for candidates like Haley and DeSantis to make gains among undecided voters.
On the Democratic side, President Joe Biden maintains a strong lead with 75 percent support among Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters. Author Marianne Williamson trails behind with 13 percent support, followed by U.S. Representative from Minnesota Dean Phillips with 5 percent support. Similar to Republican voters, 57 percent of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters say they might change their candidate choice depending on the circumstances leading up to the Democratic primary.
In a hypothetical general election matchup, Biden and Trump are in a virtual dead heat, with 47 percent supporting Biden and 46 percent supporting Trump. The poll shows that Democrats overwhelmingly support Biden, while Republicans strongly back Trump. Among independent voters, Biden holds a slight lead with 46 percent support compared to Trump's 40 percent.
The poll also delves into voter sentiment regarding various issues. It reveals that 45 percent of voters support the United States sending more military aid to Israel for its efforts in the war with Hamas, while 46 percent oppose it. This indicates a dip in support since the November 16 poll, where there was a majority in favor of military aid.
The poll highlights a partisan divide, as most Republicans (65 percent) support sending more military aid to Israel, while the majority of Democrats (58 percent) oppose it. In terms of age demographics, voters aged 18-34 and 35-49 oppose sending military aid to Israel, while white voters support it.
President Biden receives a negative 38 - 58 percent job approval rating, which remains largely unchanged from a November 15 Quinnipiac University poll. The responses varied across different issues, with voters giving mixed reviews on Biden's handling of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the economy, foreign policy, the response to the war between Israel and Hamas, and the situation at the Mexican border.
The latest Quinnipiac University poll offers valuable insights into the current state of the 2024 presidential race and public opinion on important issues. As the primaries approach, candidates will need to continue their efforts to sway undecided voters and adapt their strategies based on the evolving political landscape.
