According to the latest report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a low-pressure system is set to bring a significant change in weather conditions for southern Minnesota, including the Twin Cities. Starting in the late afternoon on Wednesday, the current rainy mix is anticipated to quickly transition into heavy snowfall, persisting for a few hours into the evening.
The NAM 3 km model reveals that snowfall rates will escalate rapidly, with heavy snow already falling across eastern South Dakota and Western Minnesota. Visibility is expected to decrease to just a quarter-mile in these regions. As the system moves through the state, rain will transition to snow, resulting in snow accumulation particularly in the western part of Minnesota. Residents in the greater Twin Cities area and much of southern Minnesota should prepare for swift and intense snowfall this evening.
Although it is forecasted that most of the affected areas will accumulate between 2 to 5 inches of snow by tonight, some localized regions, especially in southwestern Minnesota, may see snow totals exceeding 6 inches. This discrepancy is attributed to the system potentially intensifying in certain areas of lift.
As temperatures drop below freezing tonight, motorists are urged to exercise caution as roads are expected to become slick. Travel may be impacted throughout Wednesday night and into early Thursday morning.
The sudden shift in weather conditions brings a taste of winter for the region. Winter enthusiasts can enjoy the snowfall for the next few days.
