In response to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, pro-Palestinian protests have erupted across Turkey, with demonstrators gathering to express their solidarity with the Palestinians and condemn the Israeli attacks on Gaza. In a recent development, crowds attempted to storm the Incirlik air base in the Adana province in southern Turkey, where members of the Palestinian militant group Hamas have been hosted.
Organized by the IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation, an Islamist Turkish aid agency known for its support of the Palestinian cause, a convoy was arranged to travel to the Incirlik air base. The protesters aimed to both rally against the Israeli aggression in Gaza and voice their opposition towards the United States' support for Israel.
Incirlik air base, besides hosting Hamas members, has been utilized to assist the international coalition in their fight against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. As a result, it also accommodates US troops. The demonstrators led by IHH demanded the closure of the base as a symbol of protest against US backing for Israel.
During the protests, videos circulated showing clashes between the police forces and the pro-Palestinian protesters. Law enforcement utilized tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowds, who were seen waving Turkish and Palestinian flags while chanting slogans in support of Palestinians. Some protesters toppled barricades, whilst others engaged in confrontations with police officers dressed in riot gear.
Bulent Yildirim, the President of IHH, addressed the gathering in Adana and appealed to the protesters to refrain from engaging in violent acts against the police, emphasizing the need for peaceful demonstrations.
The escalating pro-Palestinian protests, their attempt to storm the Incirlik air base, and the subsequent clashes with law enforcement underline the rising tensions within Turkey surrounding the ongoing Israeli-Hamas conflict. As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsens, Turkey's criticism of Israel grows louder, with the country firmly advocating for a two-state solution.
