In a noteworthy development, a private plane arrived at O'Hare Airport on Tuesday evening carrying over 100 migrants. The incident came to light when airport police received a call regarding the arrival of approximately 100 asylum seekers at Signature Flight, as reported by a spokesperson for the City of Chicago on Wednesday.

The plane originated from El Paso, Texas, and had been chartered by the Texas Department of Emergency Management, the spokesperson confirmed. The migrants had willingly chosen Chicago as their preferred destination.

However, the situation took an unexpected turn as two individuals who were on the flight managed to flee the scene in an Uber vehicle before the authorities could arrive, according to the statement. Their motives for fleeing remain unknown at this time, and efforts are being made to locate them.

Responding to the situation, the City of Chicago has pledged to continue accommodating the asylum seekers already present at O'Hare Airport, as well as making arrangements for the new arrivals within their shelter system, the spokesperson added.

In a separate development, the office of Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement regarding the flight. The statement cited concerns over Chicago Mayor Johnson's alleged failure to adhere to the city's "Welcoming City" ordinance by targeting migrant buses from Texas. As a response, the statement announced an expansion of their operation, including flights to Chicago, in line with similar actions taken by the Biden Administration in different parts of the country. Governor Abbott had launched the border bus mission in April 2022 to support overwhelmed border communities in Texas in the midst of what they referred to as a crisis caused by the Biden Administration's handling of the situation. The statement also confirmed that the plane carried more than 120 passengers.

As the situation continues to evolve, attention is focused on addressing the needs of the asylum seekers and maintaining coordination between the City of Chicago, Texas authorities, and federal agencies. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges related to immigration and the importance of comprehensive and collaborative approaches to address them effectively.
