West Long Branch, NJ - President Joe Biden's job rating has reached its lowest point since he took office, according to the latest Monmouth University Poll. The poll highlights dismal marks for Biden's handling of immigration and inflation, while also revealing that a significant portion of Americans feel their concerns are not being adequately addressed by the incumbent president.
Public opinion of Biden's overall job performance currently stands at 34% approve and 61% disapprove - a significant drop from previous polling conducted by Monmouth University. In comparison to September, Biden's approval rating has fallen by 4 points, while his disapproval rating has increased by 6 points.
Notably, the poll indicates that only 3 in 10 Americans feel that President Biden is giving enough attention to the issues of greatest importance to them, which ranks worse than his predecessor. This sentiment is shared across party lines, with only 11% of Republicans and 25% of independents believing Biden is paying adequate attention to their concerns. Even among Democrats, a sizable minority (41%) expressed a desire for Biden to give more focus to their top priorities.
Biden's handling of key policy areas also faced significant disapproval from the American public. Over 2 in 3 Americans disapprove of his performance on immigration (69%) and inflation (68%). Additionally, more than half of Americans disapprove of his approach to climate change (54%), jobs and unemployment (53%), and transportation and energy infrastructure (52%). While Biden's fellow Democrats generally approve of his performance in most areas, there is division among them regarding his immigration efforts, with 50% approving and 47% disapproving. Even on the issue of inflation, where 62% of Democrats approve, a notable 35% expressed their disapproval.
"The Biden administration keeps touting their infrastructure investments and a host of positive economic indicators. Those data points may be factual, but most Americans are still smarting from higher prices caused by post-pandemic inflation. This seems to be what's driving public opinion. There is political danger in pushing a message that basically tells people their take on their own situation is wrong," said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute.
The poll also sheds light on the financial concerns of Americans. Currently, 44% of the public reports struggling financially, while another 43% consider themselves stable and only 12% say their financial situation is improving. These figures reflect a significant increase in financial struggles since the pandemic hit, with the number of struggling Americans ranging from 20% to 29% in the pre-pandemic years.
Furthermore, the Monmouth University Poll indicates a declining approval rating for the U.S. Congress, standing at 17% approve and 77% disapprove. This disapproval extends to congressional leaders, with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell receiving the lowest overall rating of 6% approve and 60% disapprove. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries face declining approval ratings as well.
In light of these findings, Vice President Kamala Harris holds a job rating of 35% approve and 57% disapprove. Meanwhile, only 20% of Americans believe that the country is heading in the right direction, while a majority of 69% feel that it is on the wrong track.
The Monmouth University Poll was conducted by telephone from November 30 to December 4, 2023, with 803 adults in the United States. The margin of error for the full sample is +/- 4.8 percentage points.
