In a surprising move, President Joe Biden's 2024 presidential campaign has officially joined the popular social media platform TikTok, despite previous indications that they would not utilize the platform. Campaign advisers announced that the account will be managed by campaign staff, who will regularly post content on TikTok, along with other social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, X, and Threads.
Campaign advisers emphasized the importance of connecting with voters through innovative means and creating content that resonates with diverse and crucial audiences. They expressed the intention to adapt to an evolving and fragmented media environment, bringing together a broad coalition of voters that played a pivotal role in securing President Biden's previous victory.
However, it remains uncertain if any of the campaign's "principals" will join TikTok in the future, leaving room for potential interactions with supporters directly on the platform.
Addressing concerns regarding security risks associated with TikTok, the Biden campaign reassured the public that advanced safety precautions are in place, incorporating a sophisticated security protocol to ensure data security and protection.
Rob Flaherty, Biden's deputy campaign manager, highlighted the success of the President's TikTok debut, which garnered nearly 5 million views and counting. Flaherty regarded this achievement as proof of their commitment to finding new and innovative ways to engage with voters in an increasingly personalized media landscape.
The decision to join TikTok marks a departure from earlier reports that the President's campaign would not venture onto the platform due to national security concerns. Last year, upon calling TikTok a national security threat, the Biden administration stated that they would rely on influencers and surrogates to maintain a presence promoting Biden.
It is worth noting that President Biden signed legislation in late 2022, enacting a limited ban that prohibits federal employees from using the TikTok app on government devices, further highlighting the administration's earlier concerns regarding the platform's security.
To mark their TikTok debut, the campaign released their first video during the Super Bowl, featuring President Biden playfully engaging in a this-or-that-type game. When asked about his favorite team, he playfully responded that he is an avid support of the Philadelphia Eagles.
President Biden's stance on TikTok has drawn criticism from young voters in the past. The potential ban on the platform last year sparked concerns among Gen Z activists who regarded it as a slap in the face to young voters. TikTok, popular among young people, has served as a powerful tool for mobilizing Gen Z in previous elections. Notably, a survey conducted last March found that 20% of Gen Z relied on TikTok for political information in 2022.
President Biden has actively embraced memes and internet culture as means of connecting with young voters. In line with this approach, his TikTok profile and first post feature the "Dark Brandon" meme, effectively repurposing a far-right dig into a symbol of the President's accomplishments and strength.
As President Biden's 2024 campaign ventures onto TikTok, it remains to be seen how this move will further shape the political landscape and engage young voters in the upcoming election cycle.
