In a significant pushback against his predecessor, President Joe Biden condemned former President Donald Trump's invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin to invade American allies, labeling it as "dangerous" and "un-American." Biden's remarks came during a press conference at the White House state dining room, emphasizing the importance of honoring commitments and standing up for American values.

President Biden expressed his concerns, stating, "No other president in our history has ever bowed down to a Russian dictator. It's dumb. It's shameful. It's dangerous. It's un-American." He emphasized that when America gives its word, it should hold weight, and the NATO alliance is a sacred commitment that must be upheld. He criticized Trump for considering it a burden and failing to understand the significance of NATO's response to Russia's actions.

The Senate recently passed a national security supplemental bill early Tuesday morning, but its fate in the House remains uncertain due to the opposition from Republican lawmakers influenced by Trump's previous stance on the NATO alliance. Trump openly encouraged blocking an earlier version of the bill and expressed skepticism towards NATO's efforts to counter Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Over the weekend, Trump stated that he would not defend a "delinquent" NATO ally against Russia if he were to win reelection. His comments caused international concern and provoked strong denunciations domestically. Trump later clarified that his intention was to encourage NATO members to increase their military spending.

President Biden, however, criticized Trump's transactional approach, stating, "For Trump, principles never matter. Everything is transactional. He doesn't understand that the sacred commitment we've given works for us as well." Biden referred to the invocation of Article Five after the September 11 terrorist attacks as an example of the importance of standing with allies.

Biden emphasized that Trump's remarks have raised the stakes for the approval of his national security supplemental. This bill includes funding for Israel, Taiwan, and Ukraine, providing support to these key allies amidst growing global tensions.

"America stands up for freedom. We stand strong for our allies. We never bow down to anyone, and certainly not to Vladimir Putin," Biden emphasized. He urged Congress to swiftly approve the bill, reaffirming America's commitment to its allies and its determination to counteract any threats to democracy.

The future of the national security supplemental now rests with the House of Representatives, where debates and negotiations are expected. The outcome will clarify the legislative support for President Biden's efforts to protect American interests and support allies in the face of escalating geopolitical challenges.
