In a strong rebuke to X's handling of antisemitic content, President Joe Biden and the European Commission have condemned the social media platform for promoting hate speech and disinformation. The criticism comes in the wake of controversial tweets by X owner Elon Musk, which sparked outrage and calls for action.

The White House issued a statement on Friday denouncing the "abhorrent promotion of antisemitic and racist hate" on X, stating that it goes against American values. President Biden expressed his disapproval of Musk's tweets, where he endorsed an antisemitic post and agreed with its vile content. The President emphasized that it is unacceptable to perpetuate the falsehoods behind the most fatal act of antisemitism in American history, especially in the aftermath of the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust.

The condemnation from the White House marks a culmination of a week full of controversy for X, formerly known as Twitter. IBM, one of X's major advertisers, announced that it would cease advertising on the platform. The decision came after a report by liberal advocacy group Media Matters revealed that ads from IBM, along with those from Apple, Oracle, NBCUniversal's Bravo network, and Comcast, appeared next to antisemitic material on X. IBM labeled the situation "entirely unacceptable" and suspended all advertising on the platform while launching an investigation.

The European Commission also announced a pause on ads for X due to a perceived rise in disinformation and hate speech. The platform's CEO, Linda Yaccarino, attempted to address the situation, assuring the public that X has a strong stance against discrimination and that the accounts posting antisemitic material will no longer be able to monetize their content. The platform will also label specific posts as "sensitive media" to provide users with necessary context.

Elon Musk's acquisition of X in 2022 has been marred by accusations of tolerating antisemitic content. The recent conflict between Israel and Hamas has brought heightened scrutiny to the platform, with fake videos and disinformation spreading rapidly. Musk had also clashed with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), accusing the Jewish civil rights non-profit of fomenting hatred. The ADL, in turn, condemned Musk's endorsement of antisemitic theories, emphasizing the danger of promoting such ideas during a surge of global antisemitism.

In related developments, the Center for Countering Digital Hate filed a motion to dismiss X's lawsuit against them, citing legal deficiencies. X had accused the organization of violating its terms of service, but the center argued that it was in response to their criticism of the social network.

As X faces backlash from world leaders and major advertisers, the future of the platform hangs in the balance. The calls for action against hate speech and disinformation have grown louder, with demands for more stringent content moderation to ensure the safety and well-being of users online.
