In a daring rescue operation, Powell County Search and Rescue teams managed to save four students from Asbury University who had become stranded on the treacherous Courthouse Rock in the Red River Gorge on Monday.

According to officials, the students had been camping in the area when they decided to attempt climbing the rock without any ropes. However, upon reaching the top, they realized they were unable to descend safely without the aid of ropes. Recognizing the dangerous predicament the students were in, Powell County Search and Rescue immediately sprung into action.

Authorities deemed it too risky for the students to attempt climbing down unassisted. In light of this, they called for assistance from the Kentucky State Police, requesting a helicopter for the rescue operation. Responding promptly, the KSP dispatched a helicopter to the scene.

Thanks to the swift and efficient work of the KSP helicopter crew, all four students were successfully rescued from the Courthouse Rock. Following the rescue, the individuals were thoroughly evaluated by medical personnel and are expected to make a full recovery.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety protocols when engaging in outdoor recreational activities. Authorities urge hikers and climbers to always utilize proper equipment, including ropes, to ensure their own safety and avoid putting themselves and others in dangerous situations.

The Powell County Search and Rescue team is applauded for their quick response and proficient execution of the rescue operation. Their dedication and skill ensured the well-being of the stranded students, who can now return to their studies at Asbury University with a valuable lesson learned about the importance of preparation and caution in outdoor adventures.

As always, hikers and campers are reminded to prioritize safety by being aware of their abilities and limitations, having the necessary gear, and familiarizing themselves with the terrain and potential risks before venturing into the great outdoors.
