A powerful storm is set to impact New England, bringing a mix of rain, snow, and strong winds to the region. While the southern part of New England will primarily experience rain and wind, northern New England can expect significant snowfall.
According to the First Alert Team, the White and Presidential mountains through the Mahoosuc region of Maine are expected to receive between a foot and a foot and a half of snow. Moving southwards, the deep interior of Massachusetts and the hills of northwest Connecticut could see two to four inches of snow. Higher amounts are predicted for areas like the Berkshires, the Greens, and the New Hampshire Lakes Region.
As the storm moves in, road treatments, including sanding, will likely be necessary even in areas experiencing mostly rain. The rain falling onto lingering snow and ice on rural and side streets may cause a glaze of freezing rain before the temperature rises enough to melt the snow and ice.
With up to two inches of rain predicted for southern New England, street flooding, urban flooding, and hydroplaning are expected. The accumulation of rainwater melting from the snow may lead to wet basements. Additionally, a strengthening southeast-to-south wind overnight could result in power outages in some areas.
The First Alert Team advises residents to charge their devices earlier in the evening instead of overnight, as power loss is expected, especially within 30 miles of the coast and on the western slopes of hills and mountains in central and northern New England. The wind is expected to gust up to 45 miles per hour, though it is likely to be less intense than the overnight wind.
By Wednesday morning, the heavy rain will move out of central and southern New England, leaving behind scattered showers amid breaks of sun throughout the day. Temperatures will drop, ranging from the 50s in the south to the 40s in the north, resetting the region to cooler highs in the lower 40s on Thursday and Friday.
Another storm is expected to arrive on Saturday morning, bringing rain and strong winds. Gusts of up to 50 mph are possible, particularly in southeast Massachusetts. The weather is expected to improve later on Saturday and Sunday.
Looking ahead, the following week in New England appears to be cool enough to bring the possibility of snow with the next storm, which is currently anticipated to occur around next Tuesday, according to the exclusive First Alert 10-day forecast.
