In a proactive effort to combat the illegal and dangerous practice of street racing and street takeovers, the Portland Police Bureau executed a Street Takeover Mission on December 30 and December 31. The mission, which lasted a total of 20 hours over two nights, aimed to disrupt street takeover events throughout the city and improve safety and livability in the community.

According to officials, the intensive operation led to significant results. A total of 19 arrests were made during the mission, with an additional 13 citations issued. Police efforts also led to the recovery of seven firearms, highlighting the potential risks associated with these illicit gatherings. To further address the issue, 21 vehicles were towed during the operation.

Portland Police Chief Bob Day expressed his admiration for the hard work and dedication displayed by the officers involved in the mission. Recognizing the serious consequences and negative impact of street racing and takeovers on neighborhoods, Chief Day emphasized the department's commitment to conducting similar missions in the future.

Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt also stressed the dangers posed by these reckless activities, reflecting on his own experience participating in the New Year's Eve Street Racing Mission alongside the Portland Police Bureau. He acknowledged the challenges faced by law enforcement but praised the significant number of arrests made and vehicles removed from the streets. Schmidt highlighted the recent passage of Oregon Senate Bill 615, which allows for the criminal forfeiture of vehicles involved in such illegal activities, sending a clear message that engaging in street racing and takeovers can result in criminal penalties and the permanent loss of one's car.

The Portland Police Bureau, along with the support of the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office, has taken additional measures to address this issue. The updated vehicle towing policy now permits the towing of vehicles operated by drivers without valid driving privileges or insurance, as well as those involved in street takeovers. This directive aligns with the recently implemented Portland City Code, specifically section 14A.30.080, which prohibits unlawful street takeovers and staging of street takeover events.

In light of the successful outcome of their recent mission, the Portland Police Bureau is planning future missions to further deter individuals from participating in these dangerous and illegal activities. Crashes, shootings, and other criminal behavior often accompany street takeovers, making it necessary for law enforcement to actively prevent and respond to these incidents. By targeting the root causes of street racing and takeovers, authorities are striving to protect businesses, pedestrians, and other motorists from the disruptive consequences of these events.

The Street Takeover Mission serves as a reminder that the Portland community takes a zero-tolerance stance when it comes to endangering public safety through illegal street racing and takeovers. With continued enforcement efforts and collaboration between law enforcement agencies and local officials, it is hoped that these dangerous activities will be curbed, ensuring a safer environment for all residents and visitors of Portland.
