In a heartfelt address, Pope Francis expressed his condolences for the recent surge of violence in Israel and Ukraine while urging for peace and dialogue as the preferred means to resolve conflicts. The pontiff condemned Hamas' attack on Israel and the subsequent military response, which has resulted in the deaths of thousands of Palestinians, including innocent civilians, and caused an alarming humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The pope's remarks come as the international community remains deeply concerned about the ongoing military strikes in the region. Israel's recent military actions have claimed the lives of at least seven civilians in Jenin City, located in the occupied West Bank, and two journalists in southern Gaza. Amidst this backdrop, South Africa has taken the matter to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza.

Addressing the violence, Pope Francis emphasized that resorting to aggression and violence only further exacerbates disputes and inflicts suffering upon innocent civilians. He called for an immediate cease-fire on all fronts, including Lebanon, and urged for the release of all hostages in Gaza. The pope's plea for peace echoes the collective sentiment of the international community, which seeks an end to the ongoing conflict and a return to stability and security in the region.

Furthermore, Pope Francis also touched upon the Kremlin's war against Ukraine, lamenting the horrific loss of life and extensive destruction caused by the prolonged conflict. Despite efforts to achieve peace through negotiations, the pope noted that a lasting and desired peace had yet to take root in the minds and hearts of those involved.

As the highest U.N. court, the International Court of Justice in The Hague is set to hold hearings this week regarding the South African case against Israel. The court proceedings carry immense significance, providing a platform for the international community to address the allegations of genocide in Gaza and work towards a peaceful resolution.

The pope's words serve as a reminder of the urgent need for peaceful dialogue and negotiation, highlighting that violence and aggression only lead to further suffering and devastation. It is hoped that his call for a cease-fire and release of hostages will be heeded by all parties involved, enabling a return to peace and stability in both Israel and Ukraine.
