In a bid to break free from the control and propaganda of the previous right-wing rulers, Poland's new pro-European Union government has taken control of state media, leading to a remodeled main evening newscast on state television. The new authorities wasted no time in implementing changes, as viewers witnessed the first broadcast under the new government on Thursday.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk, whose Cabinet assumed office last week, has vowed to rid the outlet and other state-owned media of the former ruling conservatives' divisive policies and propaganda. The extensive renovation of the main evening newscast began with experts and officials explaining how programs under the previous government violated standards of fairness and objectivity. As a symbol of change, the program's name was also altered from "News" to "19.30" to reflect the broadcast time on the main channel, TVP1.

The revamped program commenced with a report on the 2024 budget debate, providing viewers with a glimpse into the parliamentary proceedings. The coverage extended beyond national matters, featuring news from both Poland and around the world, presenting a range of viewpoints. Demonstrating their commitment to journalistic integrity, the newscaster emphasized that the program aspired to the highest standards and would value critical voices.

While the restructuring of state media received praise from supporters of the new government, it faced resistance from members of the ousted Law and Justice party. Protesters from the party staged a sit-in inside the TVP building in the capital, Warsaw. In response, police and security forces erected barriers. On Thursday, authorized employees were the only individuals allowed access to the premises, as some members of the Law and Justice party remained inside.

To ensure a complete overhaul, the government promptly dismissed and replaced the directors of the state television and radio outlets, as well as the government-run news agency, PAP. With eight years of control under the right-wing Law and Justice party, these entities were utilized as a platform to denigrate government critics and the opposition while promoting euroskeptic views. The sudden change in TVP management left the new editorial team with minimal preparation time for a full evening newscast on Wednesday. However, a newly appointed anchor took to the airwaves to explain the situation and assure viewers that unbiased newscasts would commence on Thursday.

As Poland's new government takes charge of state media, it aims to foster an environment of transparency, fairness, and objectivity. By bringing in fresh perspectives and embracing critical voices, they strive to rebuild public trust in the country's news outlets.
