Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a powerful speech at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai, calling upon nations to join forces and significantly reduce global carbon emissions. During his address, PM Modi emphasized India's low contribution to carbon emissions, despite having a substantial population. He also unveiled a new environmental initiative called the "green credit" scheme, which aims to promote sustainable practices with active participation from citizens.
Highlighting India's relatively low carbon footprint, PM Modi stated, "India's population is 17 per cent of the global population, but in global carbon emissions India is only at 4 per cent." He expressed satisfaction with the progress made by India in achieving the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets, evidenced by reaching the non-fossil fuel targets ahead of schedule.
Recognizing the urgency of the global climate crisis, PM Modi urged countries to work earnestly and fulfill their respective NDC commitments. "We do not have much time to correct the mistakes of the last century," he emphasized, emphasizing the need for immediate action.
To reinforce India's proactive approach towards climate change, the Ministry of Environment has launched two initiatives aligned with PM Modi's "Lifestyle for Environment" (LiFE) movement announced in 2021. The focal point of these initiatives will be the "green credit" scheme, designed to encourage eco-friendly practices deeply rooted in traditional knowledge and conservation principles inspired by the LiFE concept.
India is currently one of the few countries on track to achieve its NDC goals, aiming to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. PM Modi's presence at the opening plenary of COP28, alongside COP28 President Sultan Al Jaber and UN Climate Change President Simon Steill, showcased his commitment to the cause and further highlighted India's leadership in the global fight against climate change.
In his concluding remarks, PM Modi stressed the importance of striking a balance between mitigation and adaptation efforts. He emphasized that the global energy transition must be fair, inclusive, and considerate of the needs of all nations and communities.
PM Modi's passionate appeal for international collaboration in curbing carbon emissions and the introduction of the "green credit" scheme demonstrate India's commitment to its climate goals. As the world grapples with the pressing issue of climate change, PM Modi's call to action resonates as a crucial reminder that the time for decisive action is now.
