In an unexpected turn of events, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman enlisted the help of disgraced Republican lawmaker George Santos to create a personalized video in support of New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez. The prank, which involved Santos unknowingly offering words of encouragement to the embattled Menendez, has sparked bipartisan interest and controversy.
The incident occured after Santos was expelled from the House of Representatives due to a scathing ethics report exposing his misuse of campaign funds. Since then, Santos has been offering personalized videos for purchase on the Cameo website, allowing users to buy short messages from celebrities.
Fetterman, who has been a vocal critic of Menendez, saw an opportunity to provide the New Jersey senator with what he called "encouragement" amidst his legal troubles. For a fee of $200, Fetterman requested Santos to record a video message, with Santos unknowingly addressing Menendez as "Bobby from Jersey."
In the video, which was reportedly produced just 16 minutes after Fetterman's request, Santos began with a casual "Hey Bobby!" before offering words of support, saying "Stay strong" and ending with a festive "Merry Christmas."
Once the video was posted online by Fetterman, Santos publicly acknowledged that he had no idea who the "Bobby" in question was, expressing his amusement and stating, "I love this! I wish I knew the Bobby in question! LOL." He then called for Menendez's removal from office.
Menendez, who is facing federal bribery and extortion charges along with calls for his resignation, responded to the prank by stating, "I don't think Mr. Clickbait's donors would appreciate him enriching George Santos." The prank has raised concerns about the use of a disgraced lawmaker for political amusement, with critics questioning the appropriateness of Fetterman's actions.
It seems that Fetterman was not the only one who capitalized on Santos's newfound career on Cameo. Ohio Democrats also purchased a personalized video from Santos to troll Senator Bernie Moreno for his donations to the Santos campaign. In the video, Santos thanked Moreno for his support, mentioning his donation and expressing a desire to be involved in politics again in the future.
The use of personalized videos for political pranks has garnered attention and ignited a conversation about the boundaries of political humor and the appropriateness of utilizing individuals with tainted reputations. While Fetterman might have intended the prank to be light-hearted, it has now become a subject of bipartisan interest and criticism.
