San Francisco, CA - Paul Pelosi took the stand on the second day of the trial of David DePape, the man accused of attacking him in his San Francisco home. The incident occurred just days before the midterm elections, with prosecutors alleging that DePape intended to kidnap a federal official and assault a member of a federal official's immediate family.
Pelosi described the night of the attack as a shocking and terrifying experience. Recounting the events, he testified that he was awakened by a man standing at his bedroom door holding a hammer. The intruder demanded to know the whereabouts of Nancy Pelosi, former U.S. House Speaker and Paul's wife, and threatened to tie him up until she returned.
Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Paul Pelosi tried to remain calm. He engaged in conversation with the attacker, who expressed beliefs about government corruption and the erosion of freedom in the United States. Defense attorney Jodi Linker has indicated that she will argue that DePape viewed his actions as a necessary response to combat these issues, rather than an act of retaliation against Nancy Pelosi's official duties.
During the trial, prosecutors presented video evidence showing DePape attacking Paul Pelosi. The FBI agents who collected DePape's belongings, including electronics, testified, along with a U.S. Capitol police officer responsible for monitoring the surveillance cameras at the Pelosi residence. A Bay Area Rapid Transit police sergeant and a digital forensics expert also provided their testimony.
Paul Pelosi admitted that he has not discussed the attack with anyone and has urged his family to do the same due to the traumatic nature of the event. He further revealed that their home has an alarm system with motion detectors, but he rarely activated it when alone as his movements would trigger the alarm.
Paramedics attending to Pelosi at the scene were captured in police body camera footage, showing him lying facedown on the floor with blood on his face and hands. The time stamps on the surveillance camera footage played in court helped establish the sequence of events.
FBI Special Agent Stephanie Minor, who led the investigation, testified that video evidence showed DePape striking Paul Pelosi multiple times with a hammer. DePape displayed minimal emotion throughout the proceedings.
Minor also testified that DePape had been preparing for the attack for two months, acquiring items such as body cameras, USB memory sticks, a large backpack, and a sleeping bag. Additional items, including inflatable unicorn costumes and a box of crayons, were discovered during the FBI search, although their purpose was not clarified.
Federal prosecutors have emphasized that the evidence and testimonies presented during the trial will demonstrate DePape's online research into his targets, including gathering phone numbers and addresses. It was also revealed that DePape had utilized a public records service to obtain information.
The trial continues as the court examines further evidence and witnesses in the case against David DePape.
