In a stunning turn of events, Pakistan's general election held on Thursday witnessed an unexpected surge for candidates linked to the populist party, Imran Khan's Movement for Justice party (PTI). Despite facing numerous obstacles, including legal constraints and alleged vote-rigging, the PTI managed to secure at least 93 seats in the National Assembly, surpassing the center-right party led by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The country's military establishment, which historically wields considerable influence over political outcomes, had been widely anticipated to favor Sharif's party. However, as vote counting concluded over the weekend, it became clear that Pakistani voters had rallied around the beleaguered PTI faction, viewing their repression as a catalyst for change. The PTI's vigorous use of social media and innovative technologies like artificial intelligence played a significant role in reaching voters despite the constraints imposed upon them.

The triumph of the PTI is seen as a remarkable display of defiance and a peaceful revolt against the powerful military establishment. Omar Waraich, a special adviser at the Open Society Foundations and a seasoned Pakistan observer, described the election as an "astonishing display of defiance" and a clear message that the electorate no longer welcomes military interference in politics. Such a message brings a moment of hope for Pakistan's democracy, according to Madiha Afzal, a Pakistan scholar at the Brookings Institution.

The significant gains made by the PTI have raised uncertainty over the formation of the next government. While Sharif's party technically won the most seats, PTI-linked politicians were forced to run as independents due to legal restrictions. This opens the possibility of rival parties attempting to poach some of the PTI's elected lawmakers to form a broader coalition under Sharif's leadership.

The military authorities, who may be chastened by the unexpected outcome, could interpret it as a reason to reinforce their grip on power. However, statements from other governments and officials, including some U.S. lawmakers, urging Pakistani authorities to uphold democracy and avoid election interference, may serve as a reminder for the military to respect the electoral process.

It remains to be seen whether a government without PTI's inclusion will be deemed legitimate in the eyes of the people. Former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi emphasized the need to include Imran Khan in any solution to ensure legitimacy. The question now looms as to whether the military establishment will accept such a scenario.

Regardless of the outcome, the 2022 Pakistani general election has showcased a growing trend among young Pakistanis. They are determined to play an active role in shaping their own future and making decisions, asserting that their power outweighs that of the military in influencing the political landscape.

The election results mark a significant milestone in Pakistan's democracy, challenging the notion that outcomes are predetermined and showcasing a renewed spirit of defiance and hope for the country's future.
