In a series of overnight airstrikes conducted by the United States, sixteen individuals, including civilians, were killed, and twenty-five others were injured in both Iraq and Syria. The strikes, which targeted more than 85 locations, have sparked intense condemnation from Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani's office, who labeled them as a "new aggression against Iraq's sovereignty."

According to a statement released by the Prime Minister's office, the Baghdad government was not informed or involved in coordinating the strikes with Washington, dismissing any claims to the contrary as "lies." The statement further criticized the presence of US troops in the region, stating that it has become a source of instability, prompting Iraq's involvement in regional and international conflicts.

Reacting to the airstrikes, Iraqi military spokesman Yahya Rasool labeled them a violation of Iraqi sovereignty, warning of their "disastrous consequences" on Iraq's security and stability, as well as that of the entire region.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) has confirmed that the strikes were carried out by numerous aircraft, including long-range bombers flown from the United States. A total of 125 precision munitions were utilized in the operation, targeting over 85 designated locations in Iraq and Syria.

US President Joe Biden issued a statement acknowledging the airstrikes as a response to a drone attack that claimed the lives of three US soldiers and injured approximately forty more at a remote US base in Jordan. He stated that these strikes were the first in a series of actions by the US in retaliation for the attack.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of anti-terror fighters, claimed responsibility for the drone strike that prompted the US retaliatory actions. In response to the recent US airstrikes, the group announced missile strikes on the Ain al-Asad Airbase, which houses US occupation forces in the al-Anbar province. Additionally, they claimed to have launched missile and drone strikes on the al-Tanf military base in southeastern Syria, near the border with Jordan and Iraq, as well as the al-Khadra Village in Syria's al-Hasakah province.

The situation remains tense in the region as the US airstrikes and subsequent retaliatory actions by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq threaten to escalate tensions further. The international community closely monitors the developments as concerns grow over the impact on regional stability and security.
