According to a report by the Guardian, dense fog resulted in a series of accidents near New Orleans, with at least one person losing their life. The incidents occurred on Tuesday morning as an unusually thick fog covered the area, significantly reducing visibility for drivers.

The National Weather Service stated that the combination of wildfire smoke and fog created what is known as a super fog, causing visibility to drop to approximately a quarter of a mile. Christopher Bannan, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service near New Orleans, explained to the Associated Press that the smoke had nowhere to dissipate, contributing to the hazardous conditions.

Local CBS affiliate WWL reported that the accidents included an overturned 18-wheeler, adding to the total of at least four incidents in the area. According to New Orleans police, one fatality occurred as a result of a crash on Tuesday, as reported by Fox 8 New Orleans.

The closure of a portion of Interstate 10 in both directions ensued due to the dangerous conditions caused by the super fog. This incident follows a similarly alarming event just two weeks ago, which led to seven deaths and involved over 150 vehicles.

New Orleans has been grappling with significant smoke due to a nearby wetlands fire, generating an unpleasant odor throughout the city. The city of New Orleans explained in a statement on October 23rd that a lack of rain and high temperatures had led to the drying out of the wetlands, making it challenging to extinguish the fire.

According to Tyler Stanfield, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in New Orleans, super fog typically occurs twice a year in the city. However, he noted that it has become more frequent due to the area's drier conditions, as stated in a previous report by the New York Times.

As authorities continue to monitor the situation, drivers are urged to exercise caution and stay updated on the latest weather and road conditions to ensure their safety.
