The incident took place in the luxurious suburb of Medindie in Adelaide's inner north on Saturday evening.

Emergency services were called to the scene around 8pm, where they found Hoskins with serious injuries. She was quickly rushed to Royal Adelaide Hospital, but despite medical efforts, she later succumbed to her injuries.

According to reports, the police claim that Hoskins jumped onto the hood of their $47,000 4WD Volkswagen Amarok ute and grabbed at a door handle while Dennis allegedly drove. As a result, she fell to the ground, leading to her fatal injuries. Investigations into the incident are still ongoing to determine the exact sequence of events and what sparked the alleged incident.

Rohan Dennis, a two-time cycling time trial world champion, has since been arrested and charged by detectives and Major Crash officers. He faces charges of causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care, and endangering life. The police have urged anyone with additional information to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers.

Friends of the couple reveal that Dennis and Melissa Hoskins, who have been married since 2018 and share two young children, were planning their post-retirement life in South Australia. Dennis had recently ended his 16-year cycling career, and the couple had been considering launching their own vineyard in the Adelaide Hills.

Both Melissa Hoskins and Rohan Dennis had impressive athletic careers, representing Australia at multiple Olympic Games. Hoskins narrowly missed out on a medal in the team pursuit at the London Olympics, while Dennis won a silver medal in 2012 for the team pursuit and a bronze in 2020 for road cycling.

The news of Melissa Hoskins' tragic death has sent shockwaves through the cycling community, with an outpouring of tributes from sporting organizations and fellow athletes. The Australian Olympic Committee expressed profound sadness and offered condolences to Hoskins' family and friends. AusCycling, the national governing body for cycling in Australia, described Hoskins as a "champion cyclist" and expressed grief over the loss. Retired track cyclist Anna Meares, who is also the appointed chef de mission of the Australian Olympic Team for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, posted a heartfelt message of condolence.

Jayco-AlUla, the former team of Melissa Hoskins (previously known as GreenEDGE), also expressed their sorrow and offered support to the family and cycling community during this difficult time.
