In a recent poll conducted by the Wall Street Journal, it was revealed that if the 2024 election were held today, former President Donald Trump would win over President Joe Biden. The survey, which included 1,500 registered voters, showed Trump leading Biden by a margin of 47% to 43% in a hypothetical match-up.

The poll also revealed that Biden's numbers faced a wider gap of 37% to 31% when five potential third-party candidates were added to the mix. Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley held a significant lead over Biden, garnering 51% of support compared to Biden's 34%. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, on the other hand, only managed a draw with Biden at 45-45%.

These dour numbers for Biden were driven by deep pessimism about his job performance. A majority of 53% of respondents stated that they were "hurt" by Biden's presidency, while barely one in five Americans believed that his policies had personally helped them. More than six out of 10 voters expressed their disapproval of President Biden's performance.

However, it's worth noting that more than half of the voters also disapproved of Trump's performance as president. Despite this, on major issues such as the economy, crime, inflation, border security, and Israel-Hamas, voters expressed higher trust in Trump over Biden.

The survey indicated that two-thirds of voters believed that the economy was poor or not good, with a belief that it had worsened in the past two years. This sentiment further contributed to the preference for Trump, as voters viewed him as having more stamina and mental acuity for the job.

The poll also examined certain traits of the two politicians. While Biden was seen as "honest" and someone who "respects democracy," Trump was perceived as having an advantage in terms of temperament and character.

GOP consultant Ryan Girdusky highlighted the potential impact of the abortion issue, stating that it could be a decisive factor for many voters. Girdusky emphasized that Biden could leverage Trump's appointment of Supreme Court justices who may overturn Roe V. Wade, making abortion an important issue for many Americans.

The poll, conducted by Republican pollster Tony Fabrizio and Democrat Michael Bocian, offered valuable insights into Trump's dominance in the GOP presidential primary. With 59% of GOP primary voters supporting him, Trump clearly outpaced his Republican rivals, with Haley and DeSantis battling for second place at 15% and 14%, respectively.

The survey was conducted from November 29 to December 4 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

As the 2024 election approaches, these poll results provide an early indication of where Trump and Biden stand in the eyes of the American public. While Trump continues to hold a sizable lead, the race will ultimately depend on factors such as policy, performance, temperament, and character, as highlighted by pollster Tony Fabrizio.
