In a sad turn of events, Harry Connick Sr., the esteemed former New Orleans district attorney and father of singer and actor Harry Connick Jr., has peacefully passed away at the age of 97. The news was confirmed by the Associated Press, revealing that Harry Sr. breathed his last on Wednesday, January 24, at his residence in New Orleans. His son, Harry Jr., his daughter Suzanna, and his wife, Londa, were by his side during his final moments.
Born on March 27, 1926, in Mobile, Alabama, Harry Sr. relocated to New Orleans with his family when he was just two years old. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II before joining the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It was during his time in the Army that he met Anita Livingston, a talented flute player who later became a lawyer and judge. The couple tied the knot and had two children, Suzanna and Harry Jr., and together they owned and managed two record stores in New Orleans while pursuing their law degrees. Tragically, Anita passed away in 1981, and Harry Sr. went on to marry Londa Jean Matherne in 1995.
Harry Sr. entered the public service arena in 1973 when he was elected as the district attorney of New Orleans. Serving the city for three decades, he held the position until his retirement in 2003, winning reelections on four separate occasions. Known for his unwavering dedication to his role, Harry Sr. had become the longest-serving district attorney in history.
Apart from his notable career in law, Harry Sr. was also deeply involved in the vibrant music scene of New Orleans. Together with his son, Harry Jr., and other talented musicians, he founded the super-group Krewe of Orpheus and actively participated in the annual Mardi Gras parade. This passion for music earned him the endearing nickname of 'The Singing District Attorney.'
Following the news of his father's passing, Harry Jr. took to Instagram to express his profound love and admiration for Harry Sr. In a heartfelt post from November, the Grammy-winning artist and television personality shared a photo of himself with his father, stating, "Hangin' with my dad - my FAVORITE thing in the world! I come to see him about once a month in New Orleans, and it's still not enough! At 97, he continues to be my hero and inspiration... I love you sooooo much, dad!!!"
The loss of Harry Connick Sr. leaves a void not only for his family but also for the community of New Orleans. Current New Orleans district attorney Jason Williams extended his condolences, recognizing the immense contribution Harry Sr. made throughout his decades-long public service. Williams noted, "Such a longstanding public servant gives an enormous amount of themselves to their community - as do their families. Our thoughts are with the Connick family during this difficult time."
Harry Connick Jr., well-known for his Grammy-winning singing career, his judging role on American Idol, and his hosting duties on the daytime talk show Harry, continues to thrive in the entertainment industry. Most recently, he portrayed Daddy Warbucks in the televised production of Annie Live! He has also made memorable appearances as himself and played various characters on shows such as Sesame Street, Repeat After Me, Kevin Can Wait, and Will & Grace.
The legacy of Harry Connick Sr. as a respected district attorney and beloved family man will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His dedication to justice, love for music, and enduring influence on his son's successful career will forever remain cherished memories.
