The New Hampshire primary is currently underway, with voters braving the cold to make their voices heard in the Republican race. Former President Donald Trump is facing off against his sole remaining rival, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley. The competition for the 22 delegates at stake is expected to have a significant impact on the future of the race.

While the delegate count may be relatively small, the outcome of the New Hampshire primary carries substantial weight. Trump, aiming to replicate his resounding victory in the Iowa caucuses last week, hopes to further solidify his position as the frontrunner. On the other hand, Haley is in desperate need of a strong showing to keep her campaign viable in upcoming contests, particularly in her home state of South Carolina and on Super Tuesday, scheduled for March 5.

During an interview with "CBS Evening News," Haley expressed her belief that Trump's nomination is not a predetermined outcome. She emphasized the importance of allowing a broader range of states and voters to have a say in the selection process, stating, "You can't just have one or two states decide this. You've got to allow a lot of the country to decide this."

On the Democratic side, President Biden is absent from the ballot, and no delegates will be allocated based on the results of the New Hampshire primary. The Democratic National Committee penalized the state for maintaining its first-in-the-nation status, as they had intended for South Carolina to have that distinction in the 2024 Democratic cycle. In response, the president's reelection campaign has urged Democrats to write in Mr. Biden's name.

As polls close at the latest by 8 p.m. ET, all eyes are on New Hampshire to see if Trump can extend his winning streak or if Haley manages to narrow the gap. The outcome of this primary will undoubtedly shape the trajectory of the Republican race, laying the groundwork for future contests in South Carolina and Super Tuesday.

It remains to be seen whether this highly-anticipated election will reaffirm Trump's dominance or present an opportunity for a shifting dynamic within the Republican field.
