Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen has issued an Executive Order requiring state workers to return to the office after working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. The order is set to go into effect on January 2, 2024, mandating that agencies be fully staffed and open for business from Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

In a statement, Gov. Pillen emphasized the importance of meeting the expectations of Nebraskans and providing optimal value to taxpayers. He stated, "Nebraskans are back to work, and they expect that our agencies are fully staffed and open for business Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. As public servants, we have a duty to meet that expectation and deliver maximum value to the taxpayers."

While the Executive Order calls for a return to in-person work, it also outlines certain exceptions where remote work may be authorized by agency heads. These exceptions include public servants who do not work regular business hours, public servants who relocate away from their main office location, and agencies whose state building is at full capacity.

The decision to bring state workers back to the office comes as part of the state's efforts to restore normalcy and revive the economy in the wake of the pandemic. By bringing employees back to the workplace, the government aims to enhance efficiency, collaboration, and better serve the needs of Nebraskans.

According to the Executive Order, agency heads will have the authority to determine eligibility for remote work exceptions on a case-by-case basis, ensuring that individuals with unique circumstances can continue working effectively.

Nebraska residents can access a copy of the Executive Order on the official state website. As the state gears up for this transition, it is likely to bring about significant changes and adjustments within the workforce.

With the date of implementation set for January 2, 2024, state employees will have time to prepare for the transition back to the office environment. The move is expected to impact thousands of workers who have been working remotely since the onset of the pandemic.

As Nebraska adapts to a post-COVID-19 era, the return to in-person work will undoubtedly bring opportunities for increased collaboration and productivity. However, it will also require employees to adjust to a new routine and work environment.

In the coming months, state agencies will work on implementing the necessary measures to ensure a smooth transition and address any challenges that may arise. The priority remains to provide efficient and effective service to Nebraskans, while balancing the needs and safety of employees.

Governor Jim Pillen's Executive Order sets the stage for Nebraska's return to office-based work, signaling a positive step towards recovery and progress for the state.
