The westbound span of the Bay Bridge in Maryland has finally reopened, six hours after a massive chain-reaction crash involving over 40 vehicles. The incident forced the closure of all westbound lanes, causing significant traffic congestion on U.S. Route 50 for miles.

According to the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA), the collision occurred just before 8 a.m. on the westbound span of the bridge. First, a chain-reaction crash involving 23 vehicles unfolded, followed by a series of secondary crashes involving an additional 20 vehicles.

As a result of the extensive wreckage, all westbound lanes were closed, diverting traffic and causing substantial delays. The eastbound span of the bridge, which normally carries traffic in one direction, had to accommodate vehicles heading in both directions while authorities investigated the crash and worked to clear the scene.

Due to fog and limited visibility, the MDTA prohibited two-way operations, leading to alternating eastbound and westbound traffic on the eastbound span. Even hours after the collision, emergency responders were seen working to remove the clustered vehicles from the middle of the bridge.

Travelers planning to cross the Bay Bridge were warned of major delays by the MDTA and advised to postpone their journeys if possible. The agency stated that delays would persist in both directions, as efforts were made to restore normal traffic flow.

Finally, just before 2 p.m., the westbound span of the Bay Bridge reopened to relieved motorists. However, the MDTA stressed that delays were still anticipated and urged caution while driving in the area.

The aftermath of this multi-vehicle crash serves as a reminder of the importance of safe driving and adhering to traffic regulations. Authorities will continue to investigate the cause of the collision and assess any potential measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
