MLGW Urges Customers to Conserve Power Amidst Potential Winter Grid Stress

Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) is taking proactive measures to prevent rolling blackouts as cold temperatures put a strain on the electric system. MLGW President, Doug McGowen, stated that issuing an energy conservation alert is the first step in a series of actions to manage the increasing demand for power.
McGowen expressed concerns about the power grid experiencing the most stress on Tuesday morning, as the demand for electricity reaches its peak. He emphasized that there is a risk of being unable to meet the high demand. This situation is reminiscent of the devastating rolling blackouts experienced by thousands of people in December 2022, where power outages lasted for several days.
In 2022, rapid temperature drops and surging energy consumption led to rolling blackouts with minimal warning, providing little time for precautionary measures. However, McGowen highlighted that the current cold snap is a slow-moving air mass, allowing for advanced preparation and implementation of conservation measures.
If the energy conservation alert is issued, MLGW will request customers to voluntarily set their thermostats to 68 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, avoid unnecessary lighting, and limit the use of appliances and space heaters. While this may cause inconveniences, many citizens agree that it is necessary to prevent a repeat of the hardships endured in December 2022.
MLGW has taken steps to address previous issues and ensure effective response mechanisms. During the earlier blackouts, certain circuit breakers could not be remotely turned back on, leading to prolonged outages. However, McGowen assured the public that this problem has been resolved through significant investments in winterization and improvements in remote circuit breaker control.
MLGW emphasizes the need for collective action, urging customers to quickly comply with conservation measures once the alert is issued. By working together to reduce power usage, the likelihood of more severe consequences can be avoided.
As the potential for grid stress looms, MLGW seeks to prioritize the reliable provision of electricity while minimizing disruptions for its customers. It is a reminder of the importance of responsible energy consumption and preparedness during extreme weather conditions.
