In a remarkable turn of events, one of the two men who had been missing at sea for nearly two weeks has been found alive. According to U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson Petty Officer Steve Strohmaier, the man was discovered by a Canadian fishing boat in a life raft in Canadian waters, approximately 70 miles northwest of Cape Flattery, Washington.
The man's survival is being hailed as miraculous, considering the challenging conditions he endured while being adrift for multiple days. "The fact that he was in this life raft for multiple days, and still maintained hope, and was eventually found by a more or less random fishing boat was incredible and just a miraculous thing," said Strohmaier.
The missing fishing vessel had departed from Westport, Washington, on October 12 and was due back on October 15. However, it was not until a week later that the Coast Guard was alerted to the vessel's disappearance. The Canadian fishing boat spotted the man in the life raft and immediately radioed the Canadian Coast Guard for assistance.
The Canadian Coast Guard promptly responded to the distress call and brought the survivor back to shore, where he was then taken to a hospital. Fortunately, he was in stable condition upon arrival. The exact details of his ordeal and rescue are still under investigation by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Sadly, the search for the second missing man continues. The U.S. Coast Guard is awaiting more information, including eyewitness accounts and statements from the survivor, to determine the next steps in the search and rescue operation. The U.S. Coast Guard had previously posted about the search for the missing vessel, named Evening, on various platforms.
The search for the missing mariner was temporarily suspended on Wednesday, pending the development of new information. Despite extensive efforts by search crews who combed over 14,000 square miles for more than 8 hours, the second individual remains unaccounted for.
CNN has reached out to the Canadian Coast Guard to gather additional information about the rescue operation. The discovery of the lone survivor has given hope to authorities and loved ones, but the search for the missing man continues as they remain determined to bring him home safely.
